Did you know that global 5G connections are expected to number approximately 5.9 billion by the end of 2027, according to 5G Americas? That’s why Corning, a leader in wireless solutions, is intensifying its research and development initiatives around 5G software solutions for telecommunications networks, as we look to help our customers unlock more and more opportunities.
To that end, we recently celebrated the opening of our new Wireless Software Development Center of Excellence in Gurugram, India. Working closely with teams from our wireless development centers in the Silicon Valley and in Israel, the center’s team will cover the full spectrum of software and systems engineering capabilities needed for state-of-the-art innovative wireless communication products.
Innovation, after all, is one of our core values at Corning. As the inventor of low-loss optical fiber and as the world leader in passive optical communications, we are uniquely positioned to help network operators capture the opportunities of 5G – and that’s certainly true in India, in one of the world’s fastest-growing economies.
One of our key focus areas in wireless engineering capability development is to attract talent from leading engineering schools and equip them with skills and resources necessary to develop innovative 5G wireless solutions. As the demand for bandwidth continues to intensify, this research is critical to network operators who require reliable systems that bring 5G indoors. Corning India development center’s team will help develop fully virtualized and cloud-managed innovative 5G wireless solutions for public and private 5G enterprise networks.
This new center builds on our commitment and expertise in the wireless market, exemplified by our Everon® portfolio. Corning Wireless has cemented its place in the small-cell industry by being the preferred vendor for indoor 5G radio access network (RAN) – a major component of a wireless telecommunications system for tier 1 cellular mobile operators. Our cutting-edge mmWave indoor solution has won many awards in the industry for pioneering high-capacity indoor 5G. Our R&D teams in India, and globally, will continue to innovate in the distributed antenna system (DAS) space.
The launch of this new Wireless Center also reiterates our commitment to the India market, and our confidence in its potential. Corning has operated in this market for over 40 years and has witnessed firsthand India’s fast-paced growth thanks to its strong talent pool, business-friendly policies and manufacturing facilities. In the near future, we expect India to emerge as one of the top global markets for 5G and its applications. That’s why we chose Gurugram to open the largest Wireless Software Development Center of excellence outside of Corning’s U.S. Wireless Center.
